Fire flies is the latest game from BubbleBox which is Martjin Kunst’s site. As with all of Martins games the presentation is simple but very stylish and very professionally put together. The menus are neat and functional and everything fits together nicely.

The aim of the game is to clear the fire flies from the screen using a number of projectiles, the projectiles you fire bounce around off the borders and when they hit a fly it explodes and can cause a chain reaction with others. You only have a set amount of projectiles per level and each level gets slightly harder.

The game is obviously inspired by Danny Millers Boomshine, I feel its a much better game though, with Boomshine it all felt a bit random, some levels you won by sheer luck and the difficulty curve was just too harsh with level 12 being practically impossible.

BuubleBox’s Fire Flies feels much more as if there’s some degree of skill involved, and you can try and plan the moves where as with Boomshine its pretty much fire and hope. Fireflies is pretty hard though, it gets quite difficult pretty quickly mainly because some levels the outer ring which your projectile bounces off has holes in so you can waste a shot very easily.

Overall its a really fun little puzzle game which has pretty good replay value.
